A LARGE MOTSCHMANN TAUFLING DOLL
German, circa 1860
A papier-mâché solid dome head with wisps of painted hair and glass pupilless eyes. The taufling Motschmann body, modeled after those of early Asian dolls, has “floating” joints. Papier-mâché shoulder plate, lower torso, and lower arms and legs. The upper arms, legs and mid torso are fabric covered. White/red striped pantsuit, red velvet jacket (moth holes). Some wear to the fabric (especially the right leg) and the papier-mâché.
